Our largest program: a 174 MW battery storage build with more than 300,000+ solar modules installed, on a grid where outages are routine and hurricanes are a design input rather than a risk footnote.

Why it matters commercially

This is domestic experience, not international experience

Puerto Rico is part of the United States. Work delivered there is U.S. work: U.S. codes, U.S. procurement, U.S. labour rules. When a developer on the mainland asks whether we have built utility-scale storage in this country, the answer is yes, and it is documented.

It is also the hardest environment we could have picked. Heat and humidity year-round, salt air on the coast, and a transmission and distribution system that has been under reconstruction for years. Equipment that behaves in a temperate climate does not necessarily behave there.

We hold active registrations in the territory: merchant certification with the Departamento de Hacienda for engineering and electrical installation services, authorization from the Secretaría de Estado to operate, and current coverage with the Corporación del Fondo del Seguro del Estado for our workers and projects.

What the job involved

  • Concrete foundations and plinths for containerized battery enclosures
  • Placement and mechanical installation of enclosures along the foundation line
  • Transformer setting and medium voltage interconnection
  • Power cabling, battery racks and module-level connection
  • Commissioning and performance testing
  • Crew mobilization, supervision and safety management on site

What the island taught us

On a weak grid, storage is not an optimization

On the mainland, a battery is usually an economic decision — arbitrage, capacity, ancillary services. In Puerto Rico it is an operating condition. If the system cannot ride through an outage, the facility stops.

That changes how you engineer: thermal design against real ambient conditions rather than nameplate ratings, corrosion protection for salt air, sealing against dust and driving rain, and controls that assume the grid will misbehave rather than hoping it will not.
